World Spay Day

To some, the idea of neutering your beloved furry friend might seem daunting or even downright cruel, but there are life-saving benefits to go through it.

Advantage #1: Stopping Over-Population

In many countries, there is an overabundance of stray dogs, many of whom suffer from hunger, disease, and abuse.

By neutering your dog, you can help reduce the number of unwanted litters that contribute to the stray dog population. This, in turn, can help reduce the number of dogs that end up in shelters or on the streets, where they may be at risk of illness, injury, or even euthanasia.

In addition to the benefits for your own dog and household, neutering can also have a positive impact on the welfare of dogs in your community and beyond. So, by choosing to neuter your dog, you’re not just doing a favor for your furry friend, but for dogs everywhere.

Advantage #2: They Live Longer

Numerous studies proved that average lifespan of altered dogs (and cats) is significantly higher. Partially because they won’t roam that much, but it also reduces the chance of certain types of cancer depending on their gender. When we only have 12-16 years with them, getting at least another 1.5 – 2 years (or even 4, depending on size and gender) is something that all of us wish for.

Advantage #3: Say Goodbye to Doggy Odors

When they’re not spayed or neutered, dogs tend to mark their territory with a particularly pungent scent that can linger in your home for days.

Neutering your dog can actually help reduce their urge to mark their territory and, in turn, minimize those unpleasant odors. So, not only will your house smell fresher, but your friends and family will no longer have to plug their noses when they come over to visit.

Advantage #4: Saves Money On The Long Run

Avoiding life-threatening diseases also reduces vet bills and caring for a new litter does not come cheap either. Remember, if they can, they will reproduce, accidents happen. It’s your responsibility.

Behaviour issues can also decrease with spayed/neutered dog, meaning less confrontations and fights, less injuries.

Advantage #5: Purebred Are No Exceptions

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking – “but my dog is a purebred, shouldn’t I breed them to preserve their bloodline?”. While that may be a valid concern for some, it’s important to remember that there are already plenty of purebred dogs in the world, and many of them end up in shelters or with rescue organizations simply because there are too many of them.

Furthermore, breeding purebred dogs can often lead to health problems due to genetic defects or inbreeding, which can be costly and heartbreaking for both the dog and the owner. By neutering your purebred dog, you can help reduce the likelihood of contributing to these issues while still enjoying the many benefits of having a furry companion in your life. Leave the breeding to those few who have the time and knowledge to keep the breeds healthy, and pure.

It’s unquestionably the right decision in every case when it’s not a skilled breeder. And it doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t change their personality, won’t make them weaker. Not only will you save yourself some headaches, but you’ll also be doing your part to keep the dog population under control.

The last Tuesday of February celebrates World Spay Day to highlight the importance of neutering our pets to save lives.

This is Day 1 in the #100daysOfThoseDays. The series was started by Christine and Gloria and uses the “National/Global Something” of a particular day as the basis of the post. You can choose your own, and posting doesn’t have to consecutive.
