Knowing Mia

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” -Albert Einstein, What Life Means to Einstein (1924)

Here’s what our friendly AI has to say about this:

Mia was a curious dog with a vivid imagination. She loved to explore new places and experience new things. Her human, Missy, often took her on adventures, but Mia always wanted more. She wanted to see everything the world had to offer, to learn about every creature and experience every sensation.

One day, Mia stumbled upon a magical door that led to a world beyond her wildest dreams. There, she discovered creatures she never knew existed, landscapes she could have never imagined, and a realm of endless possibilities. With each step she took, Mia’s imagination grew stronger, and she felt like she was evolving into something greater.

As Mia explored this new world, she realized that knowledge was indeed limited. But her imagination, her ability to dream and to envision a better future, was limitless. And that, she knew, was the key to progress and evolution. So, she continued to let her imagination guide her on her journey, always eager to discover what lay beyond the next horizon.

What are the things we really know? How much of our knowledge is imagined? We experience the world through our cognitive biases: our understanding of the world can be limited by our senses, our experiences, perceptions, and beliefs. What I know as a fact is an opinion to you. What I know about you can never be the whole truth. I will never be able to experience life as Mia knows it – I can only imagine it. But I can, I do know what it means to have her in my life.

Joy

I am not a morning person. Mornings are grey, foggy, uncomfortable. But not with Mia. The moment I open my eyes she greets me with happy barks, loving licks, an infectious energy. The sound of her tail thumping against the wall, her careful jumps are enough to bring a smile to my face. As I sit up and stretch, Mia is already wiggling and licking in excitement. I can’t help but feel my own happiness spreading, as I know she is waiting to play tug – our usual morning routine. Waking up like this makes the start of the day easy, carefree, full of love.

Mindfulness

Mia exists in the moment. She doesn’t care about the pains of the past, doesn’t worry about the future, she lives. All our human efforts to achieve the same are faulted at their core because we are “trying”. Mia doesn’t try – she just does it. It’s inspiring. It’s contagious. When I’m with her, I can really be with her in that moment which is difficult to do in other areas in life.

Fresh air and beautiful places

I love being outside, in the forest, on the field, by the lake or a small stream. The quieter, the better. What I don’t like is leaving the house. I know, I know, contradicting, but it is what it is. Once I manage to get over the hurdle of closing the door behind me, it’s all sunshine and rainbows. Amd Mia gives the perfect reason to get started.

Unconditional love

I’ve never experienced love that wasn’t treated like a transaction. The love that I had was always about what I can give, how I look, what was my perceived value. Even as a child, I was stuck in the tug-of-war between my parents, measuring all my actions on a delicate scale: if I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t worthy of my parents’ love. Probably that’s why I have always been so fond of animals: they are always more generous with their affection. Mia is the same. She doesn’t care if my hair looks crazy or greasy. She doesn’t care how I’m dressed, how big my stomach is. She always looks at me with such love and affection, I often have to look away. But it’s healing all those scars of “I’m not enough”, and I slowly start to see myself through Mia’s eyes. And what she sees is who I want everyone to see.

  1. I definitely connect to “Mia exists in the moment”. At the moment my husband is vacuuming the house and our puppy Horace finds this very exciting and chases the vacuum claner and hides from it and is thoroughly engaged. He turns 1 this weekend but is far from grown up.

  2. Great Albert Einstein quote.

I smiled at your use of the phrase, “Her human, Missy. . .” because when I talk to my dog, Maddi, I always refer to us as her humans. My other thoughts as I was reading were along the lines of how it would be interesting to be able to know what pets are truly thinking. Also, have you read “The White Bone”? Its written from the point of view of an elephant. I haven’t read it in years, but I recall enjoying the read.
